A low glycaemic index carbohydrate enhances memory and mood in school-age children:
Children around the age of 4 to 10 years have a much higher rate of brain glucose utilization than adults and seems to be particularly susceptible to the differing effects of glucose release. Accordingly, children’s cognitive function benefit most from the replacement of fast glucose release carbohydrates such as normal table sugar, with a slow and sustained glucose supply carbohydrate, such as isomaltulose. In the study, children who were fed a low glycaemic or slow energy release breakfast maintained significant better memory performance later in the morning and were in a better mood later in the morning, compare to those consuming a glucose- or fast energy release breakfast.
